Magnificence, for me, as it was shown in the story is the ability or a trait of the mother to control such strong emotions and contain herself in situations like that. It's not easy to control emotions especially if it is anger. Usually, if people get angry, they just burst it out without even thinking of the consequences but the mother didn't. She was able to think first and protect her children by not showing them that anything's wrong. What she did was admirable.
Before the discussion, I was a bit confused about what really happened in the story. I've got an feeling Vicente somehow a pedophile but it wasn't directly shown in the story. It's like reading between the lines. I was confused about why Vicente covered his stomach with the child's paper and why the mom asked Vicente to go upstairs and then hit him on their way down. That was a bit confusing.
After the discussion, things became clearer and my classmates perspective about what happened helped me understand the story better.
I remember this incident a few years ago when we were celebrating a formal birthday celebration of my dad and everything's going just fine. My mom was the host of the event and then during the latter half of the celebration, her sister called and told her that their brother died because of heart attack. I saw the pain in my mom's eyes but she contained herself and continued hosting the celebration. She smiled and talked to everybody like nothing's wrong. She exchanged stories with the guests and laughed at theirs. It really looks like nothing's wrong. After the celebration, when we were already home, she didn't say a word to us. She went upstairs, took a bath, and then went to their room and that's where she cried her heart out.
I admire my mom for everything that she does. She's always so classy about everything. The mother in the story actually reminds me of my mother.
